A Sinner in Mecca
DocumentaryIn a country where homosexuality is punishable by death and where it's officially prohibited to film, in places which a non-Muslim cannot enter, director Parvez Sharma documents his journey to Mecca, Saudi Arabia – the sacred hajj which each practising Muslim most undertake at least once in a lifetime. Sharma sets off on the journey as a gay man living openly in the USA, one who's appeared in the media with his previous controversial film about gay Muslims and has publicly been declared an infidel. The secretly shot film is a chilling and enthralling action adventure which touches the burning questions about today's faces of Islam right in its heart. From the inside, it confronts the religion and the brutal impacts of its radical political form on the lives of people in the 21st century. Posing questions whether it's possible to change it and how, this deeply personal story focuses on searching the options for reconciling one's faith and the sexuality, which is condemned and punished by said faith.
