Kokomo City
Documentary SectionFour sex workers from Atlanta and New York reveal their stories in this documentary where no topic is taboo. We learn about the good income owed to their trans identity, but also about the constant danger to their lives. It touches upon such serious problems of not only American society as racism and sexism. Cheeky, fierce testimonies intertwine with acted scenes and passages as if from a music video while the film keeps its blistering pace and energy. And despite its harsh message, it brims with wit and joie de vivre. The debuting director managed to build a close bond with the protagonists, and she was the film’s cinematographer and editor as well, thus offering a true auteur piece with an original approach to the documentary genre. The film won an Audience Award at Berlinale and Sundance, where it also won the NEXT Innovator award.
