Malila: The Farewell Flower / Malila
International Feature Film CompetitionAfter his daughter dies, Pitch wants to see his old love, Shane, who manages a jasmine plantation in the remote Thai countryside, one last time. Pitch tries to rekindle the forgotten romantic flame before it dissolves like funeral flower petals scattered across a river. The former lovers’ meeting not only submerges them into the past, but also significantly affects the direction of the future. This poetic film subtly intertwines dramatic stories unfolding in the shadow of the mercilessly approaching end. Just like fate forces flowers to wilt with autumn’s arrival, it leads a man into the eternal sleep. Set in the middle of a tropical jungle, this independent Thai film about the necessity to be able to say goodbye will be the country’s candidate for the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film, offering a meditative contemplation on the fragility of love and human life.
