The Divide / La Fracture

International Feature Film Competition

Raph cannot accept that, after so many years and so many arguments, her wife Julie has finally decided to leave her. She's ready to do anything to save the relationship. But careless behaviour brings them both to the ER of a Parisian hospital, which is bursting with people injured during the Yellow Vest protests. The staff is overworked; the stressed patients must spend long hours in the crowded waiting room. This environment naturally incites new encounters, heated debates, and mutual support -- fear and pain don‘t make any difference between an upper-class intellectual and a truck driver. But the riots outside the windows are escalating, mirroring the tension inside the hospital, where the differences between the characters grow dramatically. With empathy and honesty, this thrilling social drama by the award-winning director Catherine Corsini reflects French society today and its main problem: omnipresent social inequality. The film won a Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes for its harsh commentary on the social situation, the breathtaking acting performances, and unparalleled filmmaking.
