Law of Love / Zákon lásky

Audience Award Winner 2021

After the success of Caught in the Net (2020), director Barbora Chalupová comes back with a documentary tragicomedy, The Law of Love, which maps the issue of equal marriage in the Czech Republic. A bill proposing to expand marriage to same-sex couples has been lying in the Chamber of Deputies for three years, although, according to the MPs, it’s “ageing like fine wine”. The participants in the discussion are the organization Jsme fér, the Chamber of Deputies, supporters of traditional marriage who consider same-sex marriage just a revolutionary and unacceptable social change, the Church, those who consider the institution of marriage merely a luxury and deem registered partnership sufficient, and of course the couples who want and need to get married, but still can’t. The film clearly and comprehensively presents all the facets of the same-sex marriage issue, which is still a taboo in our society – even in 2021.
