Potato Dreams Of America
International Feature Film CompetitionVladivostok, the USSR. It is the year 1985 and little Potato dreams of a better life without red scarves, power outages, and homophobic comments. The fall of the Communist regime brings a glimmer of hope for a brighter future, but everybody soon realizes that the change in the state apparatus has only led to better distribution of toilet paper. Political pressure and rigid opinions still prevail in society. Potato’s family sees delivery from poverty in a suspicious ad that beckons to the land of fulfilled dreams. But is the grass really greener, and chips crunchier, on the other side? A biting comedy about cultural stereotypes that holds nothing sacred. The unusual and playful theatre stylization gives the film a comedic twist, turning a flight from one’s home in fear of one’s own life into a satiric tall-tale poking fun at all the ideological -isms of modern history.
