Love is the Devil
ReunionRather than being a traditional biography of an artist, the captivating Love Is the Devil is a mature auteur piece about the complicated and passionate relationship between British painter Francis Bacon and his younger lover, George Dyer. Starring one of the legends of the British cinema and theatre, Derek Jacobi, and one of the 007 agents, Daniel Craig, for whom the film represented one of his first bigger roles.
Martin Hrdina presents:
I could not miss Love Is the Devil when I was twenty. At that time, I was searching for understanding and depiction of my own life in all “gay films”. Director John Maybury is a true artist, and I remember how shaken I was by his combination of beauty, brutality, sarcasm, and deep love. In 1998, I was studying architecture in Liberec. We lived for art, and this film is a piece of art. I was touched by how brilliantly the director brought Francis Bacon's paintings to life in his portrait of one of my favourite artists.
