A Deal with the Universe
DocumentaryJason Barker and his wife Tracey have been trying to conceive for several years. Assisted reproduction isn’t working out, and their hopes are almost crushed when Tracey is diagnosed with cancer. Although the treatment is successful, pregnancy is out of the question. But the couple doesn’t want to give up on the chance to have their own child, and so decide on a radical alternative solution: to have Jason carry the child. Since he still has functional female genitals, he just has to stop his hormonal treatment and start trying to conceive at the clinic. And thus starts a journey into the unknown and into uncharted medical territory, full of humour, stress, love, tension and unbreakable determination. This autobiographical film consists only of the personal video diaries that Jason and Tracey made over a ten-year period. Jason – a stand-up comedian, a caring partner and a pioneer in medicine – tells his story about identity, gender and parenthood with ease.
