Based on a True Story
Retrospective - Based on True Stories
Warning: Do not continue reading if you do not know the ending of the film Dog Day Afternoon. Warning nr. 2: in case you keep an ingenuous belief to the disclaimer - this film is “based on a true story” then better pick a full-on fiction film from this catalogue and fall asleep every night at peace with the truthful setting of Dream Factory… So, you were warned: on a hot Friday afternoon in Brooklyn 1972 a pathetic attempt at a bank robbery went down, led by a certain John Wojtowicz. Three years later a film hit the cinemas, with Al Pacino starring as Wojtowicz, and became an instant classic of The New Hollywood. Director Walter Stockman set out thirty years later to find out the true story behind the allegedly “true” story. What is the version of the elusive Wojtowicz? Why did the film, which secured him immortality on the silver screen, cause him to be exemplarily punished by his fellow prisoners? And did he ever get to see his lover again, the one for whom he attempted the robbery in the first place?
