All the Silence / Todo el silencio
International Feature Film CompetitionWhat is it like to be gradually losing the ability to perceive the world the way we’ve been used to? Miriam soon finds out and cannot reverse it in any way. Although she is making her living as a sign language teacher and her girlfriend is deaf, the gradual loss of hearing turns her life upside down. It’s because Miriam is not only a teacher but also a music aficionado and theatre actress. All the safely familiar things, like the bustle of her city, and the tones of buskers, are slowly turning into a fuzzy murmur until they eventually dissolve completely… This film allows us to experience hopelessness together with the main protagonists through the authentic audio – we perceive the whole story through Miriam’s ears. The film builds on empathy and introduces the hearing-impaired community as a diverse group full of individualities and different points of view. Are we aware of how much the hearing-impaired community is similar to any other community? The seemingly different challenges we deal with actually often are just variations on the same issues. And unfortunately, an inherent part of most of them is internalized discrimination.
