My Beautiful Laundrette
Retrospective
The already classic story of Pakistani immigrant Omar and slacker Johnny takes us to London in the mid 1980s, the era of Margaret Thatcher, who definitely wasn´t friendly towards members of any minorities. Omar´s uncle, Nasser, who has adapted well in the new country, offers his nephew the chance to manage an old laundromat.
Johnny, who is unemployed and homeless, starts helping Omar and together they transform it into a prosperous business. A romantic relationship develops between the two young men; unfortunately, however, the xenophobic and homophobic society of the Thatcher era views such issues in a pretty negative light... The film is not only a
refreshing comedy, but also an excellent study of a post-modern multicultural Britain. The part of Johnny was the first more significant role played by Daniel Day-Lewis, now a star who has collected the most prestigious film awards. Hanif Kureishi was nominated for an Oscar for this film´s partly biographical screenplay.
