Coming Out
Retrospective
Filip is a teacher starting his first job at a high school. He meets Tanja, a colleague whom he soon starts dating. But the relationship is disrupted when Tanja is visited by her friend, Jakob. Thanks to him, Filip finds himself in a gay bar one night, and falls head over heels for young Matthias. In the context of Central European cinema, it is a groundbreaking queer film with a fascinating production history. It is the last film produced by the legendary East German DEFA studio, and also the only East German film openly discussing homosexuality. The film reflects the era and the life of the queer community at that time with great authenticity,
simultaneously avoiding contemporary political rhetoric. The film symbolically premiered on the day the Berlin Wall fell.
