Staying Vertical / Rester vertical
International Feature Film CompetitionOne of the many trips taken by scriptwriter Léo to the wilderness in search of wolves turns out to be almost fateful this time around. During his journey, he encounters a shepherdess named Maria, who seduces him. Léo moves to her farm and meets her two sons and father-in-law. Soon Léo and Maria conceive a child of their own. Maria refuses to look after the child, however, and Léo is left alone with the new-born. With the baby in his arms, he enters the lives of the people in his new environment, merely disturbing some and intentionally ending one of them. Staying Vertical is a dreamy contemplation of the crisis of the role of man and father in today's society and, simultaneously, an explicit view on sexuality unrestrained by conventions. Director Alain Guiraudie (director of the critically acclaimed Stranger by the Lake) provokes the audience with a mix of explicit erotic scenes, unexpected plot twists and a fairy-tale atmosphere, which infallibly disrupts the viewers' expectations.
