Heavenly Creatures
Retrospective: Only Lovers Left AliveChristchurch in New Zealand in the early 1950s was a grey city where Pauline Parker was going through her teenage years at a boring school and with uncomprehending parents. When the new classmate Juliette entered their class one day, she seemed to be from a different world. Beautiful, educated, travelled. Pauline didn't even hope to have so much common with her; not only did they have similar childhood experiences, but also especially vivid imaginations. The imaginary kingdom of Borovia that they made up together became their refuge from parents and reality. It started to expand just as quickly as their mutual bond and love. And the girls were willing to do anything for love, just like the protagonists of their beloved books and films, even to kill. This drama from the Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson was based on a real case of brutal murder with testimony taken from Pauline's diary. Even 20 years after the premiere, “Heavenly Creatures” hasn't lost any of its intensity thanks to the brilliant directing and acting performances, but most of all thanks to Kate Winslet’s debut.
