A Girl At My Door / Dohee-Ya

A young policewoman named Young-nam is transferred from Seoul to a small provincial town as the new Chief Inspector; reassigned for an internal scandal caused by “improper behaviour”. There, she meets the seasoned men she is in command of, as well as the town's unofficial leader. During the day, he keeps the town economically afloat, but by night becomes an aggressive drunk, beating his fourteen-year-old daughter Do-hee, while everyone else pretends not to notice. Young-nam decides to look after the girl, not knowing that she is about to trigger an avalanche. Public opinion turns against Young-nam after Do-hee resists her support,  and especially once her colleagues find out why she's been transferred, and who's her beautiful female visitor. July Jung's debut drama was successfully introduced in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes film festival. It was praised for its captivating story, an original twist, and for excellent performances by the actresses: the Korean star Doona Bae (“ Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”, “Cloud Atlas”) in the leading role, and young Kim Sae-ron as her ward.
