Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train / Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train
Retrospective: Only Lovers Left AliveBefore he died, the painter Jean-Baptiste wished that all those who'd loved him (and maybe also hated him a little, with regards to his character) during his life would accompany him on a train journey as a final farewell. A motley group of old friends, their partners, former lovers, bickering wives and children thus set off from the Parisian main station southward to Limoges where Jean-Baptiste will be buried. His coffin is driven by Thierry along the railway. The group is accompanied by one uninvited guest, a beautiful youth named Bruno, who played a part in the lives of several of the men present. This film orgasm for all the cinephiles was shot using CinemaScope format during regular train operation for preserving authenticity. Director Patrice Chéreau's magnum opus is a cynical emotional journey into the dark depths of topics such as family, love, mortality, and the forgiving of past sins. The film was presented in the main competition at IFF Cannes in 1998 and won three César Awards (including for camera and directing) out of eleven nominations for this most prestigious French prize.
