Tom at the Farm / Tom a la ferme
International Feature Film Competition
Tom (played by the film's director, Xavier Dolan) is devastated by the loss of his partner, Guy, and arrives from the city to a remote farm, where Guy's family is holding the funeral. Yet nobody is expecting him there. Guy's unstable mother keeps asking why her son's fiancée hasn't come. His violent brother, who smells and sounds just like Guy, terrorizes Tom and drags him into a pathological game. It seems that Guy had his secrets as well... Marking his first screen adaptation, of Michel Marc Bouchard's critically acclaimed play, Dolan develops his unique visual style and exquisite use of music which characterize his work, while also venturing into new territory with hypnotic images of beautiful yet horrifying landscapes, and escalating conventions to the thriller and horror genres. The film was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize in the main competition of the Venice film festival, and received eight nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction, and Original Score.
